• SPEC file controls packaging process

• Patches are applied to pristine sources

• Software is configured and compiled

• Software is installed temporarily into a Build Root separate from the system's main root

• Files are listed with their appropriate attributes in the SPEC file

• RPM outputs the source RPM and binary RPM
