Introduction to GNU tar
GNU tar is a program which was designed to store and extract files from a tar archive (Tape ARchive).
The archive may be a backup medium, such as tape.
The archive may simply be a single file on disk.
Many software programs are distributed as tar files.
GNU tar is installed by default in Linux.
For help, type "info tar" as the man page is outdated.
